Residential Complex in Castel Gandolfo near Rome

With this residential complex, the municipality of Castel Gandolfo became the first to implement a project based on the public social housing plan developed for the entire Lazio region (and based on the specifications of the regular development plan). The site, situated at the foot of a hill, slopes down towards the outside. The complex, arranged in angled building sections around open courtyards, integrates seamlessly into this topography by placing the taller, three-storey buildings on the periphery and the lower, two-storey buildings in the courtyard area. The building mass is articulated by a clearly legible rhythmic sequence of narrow apartments (with three rooms) and wider apartments (with four to five rooms), by intervening stairwells whose pitched roofs contrast with the gable roofs of the apartment blocks, by chimneys projecting from the exterior walls like risalits and intersecting the eaves, by the staggered depths of the facades, and by projecting balconies.
