Kindergarten Stuttgart-Neugereut

The appearance of this kindergarten is characterized by simple construction, consistent attention to detail, and a spatial design largely defined by the timber frame. The timber skeleton consists of 12/12 cm columns, 12/36 cm main beams (both made of glulam), and 8/14 cm squared timber rafters. The main beams rest on the columns, with spans of 5.25 m and 315 m, while the rafters also rest on the main beams, each spanning 315 m. The structural challenge with this beam arrangement lies in the design of the main beam-column bearing. The beam is subjected to cross-grain stress at the bearing point, while the column is subjected to longitudinal stress along the grain.
