Canteen Building of Charterhouse School near London

Along with seven new student residences, the canteen of Charterhouse School (one of England's most renowned private schools) was built; it is attached to one of these groups of residences. The school's residential concept emphasizes maximum independence and individuality for each residence unit. However, since it was not economically feasible to equip each residence with its own kitchen and dining hall, an organizational and architectural form had to be found for the central canteen serving all seven units, one that accommodated and incorporated this desire for autonomy for the individual residence communities. Thus, within the canteen complex, seven dining halls, each separated by folding walls and accentuated by a high, boat-shaped roof structure, are arranged around the flat-roofed central kitchen, all within a rectangular overall plan.
