High-Rise Student Housing Block in Munich

Originally erected for the 1972 Olympics, this block by Günther Eckert has since then provided 801 dwellings for students. The modular concrete framing facilitates column-free internal space and flexibility in the layout. As part of an overall refurbishment, a new curtain-wall facade was developed that preserves the character of the complex yet complies with present-day energy standards and fire regulations. A thermally insulating skin has been wrapped round the outer structure, and the loggias now form part of the living space. The original materials, coloration and articulation have been readopted and extrapolated, with new lightweight-concrete frame elements set in front of the existing concrete framing.
