Report: Rem Koolhaas Architecture Biennale

 - Frank Kaltenbach

He wanted to create a Biennale that focused not on the architects, but on architecture itself. But where can one see future-oriented architecture in Venice? The fact that the big stars and their landmarks aren't being put in the foreground is commendable in itself. However, Rem Koolhaas isn't showing any buildings at all – not even those from young, innovative firms, nor bottom-up "social design" projects from Africa, South Asia, or Latin America. Thus, the 14th Architecture Biennale is promoting only one architect – its director, Rem Koolhaas.
