The reading room's roof was constructed with steel trusses and trapezoidal sheet metal panels to save weight. The trusses were coated with a fire-retardant paint. The steel structure projecting from the arcade wall, with its division into steel profiles, is fitted with fire-resistant glazing (G 30). Spiral staircases and gallery parapets are clad or infilled with perforated sheet metal panels attached to tubular profiles.
