The new museum is attached to the Bottrop "Quadrat" (Square) and connected to it by a covered and glazed bridge. Josef Albers, a native of Bottrop and a teacher at the Bauhaus, emigrated to America in 1933. After 50 years, Albers returns to his hometown through his work. The Albers Museum houses a donation (approximately 100 original works and his complete graphic oeuvre) from the American Albers Foundation and from the estate of Albers' widow. The floor plan is based on a square (28 x 28 m) into which a smaller square (14 x 14 m) is inserted; the large exhibition space is built above this smaller square.
