Funeral Chapel in Höhenkirchen/Upper Bavaria

Location and Design Concept: Since Höhenkirchen still retains an intact Upper Bavarian townscape, it seemed natural, when planning its new funeral chapel, to recall the most important traditional design features of rural architecture in this region. The broad and calmly proportioned building, the deeply pitched gable roof with its wide overhangs and red tile covering, as well as the restriction to a few locally typical materials – primarily wood – were intended to integrate the building harmoniously into the landscape. In accordance with the changed understanding of meaning, the funeral chapel was not meant to manifest itself as a sacred architectural monument, but rather to blend discreetly into the ensemble of cemetery, fields, meadows, and pastures in form and character.
