The urban planning approach for the new shopping and town centre in the heart of the relatively new town of Swindon (100 km west of London) was as follows: Urban development had created a vacuum between the shopping area and the industrial district growing to the north. Furthermore, the two districts were separated by a canal created in the 1950s. This central area was now to be revitalized as a new town centre with a shopping and pedestrian zone, serving as a link between the two districts. Since no existing buildings worth preserving had to be taken into account, the design could be quite expansive.
