Concert Hall in Snape/England

The conversion of the largest of the numerous malt houses built in this city around the mid-19th century, with their characteristic gently sloping roofs and wooden ventilation chimneys, into a concert hall is the result of close collaboration between the initiator, Benjamin Britten, and the architect. The aim was to achieve maximum functional and architectural improvement with minimal visual alteration. During the conversion, the former drying loft of the malt house's north wing was combined with the central storage gallery to create a concert hall with 824 seats by removing the dividing wall. The outer storage gallery was lowered to parquet level and transformed into the foyer, while the upper floor of the former purification building became a restaurant; the performers' rooms are located below.
