The Frankfurt airmail sorting centre is one of the most important of the eleven airmail sorting centres of the German Federal Post Office (58% of total airmail letter and parcel volume). On average, approximately 320,000 outgoing and 460,000 incoming letters, as well as 2,100/2,200 parcels, are processed daily by a total of 500 employees working in multiple shifts. Frankfurt Airport's airmail traffic reaches a total volume of nearly 80,000 tons annually. 250 flights per day are required for transport. The existing and leased buildings could no longer accommodate this constantly growing volume of airmail. Therefore, a decision was made to construct a new building as part of the new Terminal Mitte (Central Terminal) building project. The 13,000 square metre plot of land acquired for this purpose connects directly to the airport apron on one side and to the road network (Frankfurter Kreuz interchange) on the other.
