Herten Comprehensive School is a comprehensive school for 1700 students with seven parallel classes: one and three parallel classes in lower secondary, and alternatively, eight parallel classes in lower secondary. School facilities are also open to the public, in particular the library, the forum, lecture halls, cafeteria, and sports halls. The school is in use throughout the day. The forum and library, as well as the cafeteria and sports hall—that is, the spaces that also serve communication between the school and the public—are directly connected to the main access point. They form the centre of the ring-shaped subject and leisure areas. While teaching and play activities are shielded in individual rooms and groups of rooms, the forum, library, and sports hall break up the floor levels; through diverse sightlines and pathways, they make the entire complex transparent and, at the same time, allow students to observe the lessons. The spatial structure benefits from the site's conditions: the terraced landscape of the outdoor areas continues inside the building.
