This modern gallery, combined with a museum of prehistory and local history, was initiated by significant Ice Age finds from the Emscher Valley and the collection of the Bottrop-born painter Josef Atbers. The building is located on the edge of the city centre, amidst a green zone extending far into the city, and was intended to be integrated with an existing, older local history museum to form a cohesive complex.
