As part of the expansion of the Technical University of Darmstadt, new buildings were constructed for the following chairs and institutes within the Department of Mechanical Engineering: Ergonomics, Materials Handling Technology, Reactor Technology, Forming Technology, Machine Tools, Fluid Mechanics, Machine Dynamics, Heat Engineering, Thermal Processes and Heating Technology, Measurement Technology, Thermodynamics, and Technical Thermodynamics. Most of these functional areas were combined in two multi-bay hall buildings. Two-storey workshop wings with a usable height of 3.50 m are attached to both sides of the 8.50 m high main bays, which are equipped with overhead cranes (one main bay in Hall I, two main bays in Hall II). Only the more functionally focused areas of the teaching fields of Internal Combustion Engines, Thermal Turbomachinery (high noise levels), and Reactor Technology (radiation shielding) were not integrated into the hall wings; they are located in separate buildings on the east side. This arrangement allows for possible future expansion of the hall wings to the north and east.
