The first stage of the waste composting plant was built in 1966 to serve approximately 140,000 residents. Due to the expansion of waste disposal and a shortage of landfill space, the plant was expanded in 1971. Its catchment area covers a region with 240,000 inhabitants. The plant processes 25 to 30 tons of household and commercial waste per hour; its throughput can be increased to 37 tons per hour. This plant pioneered new approaches to waste disposal and, consequently, to environmental protection. It is one of the most modern composting plants in Germany.
