Large Wastewater Treatment Plant Düsseldorf-South

Even before the North wastewater treatment plant on the left bank of the Rhine near Ilverich was commissioned, it was clear that a second plant in the south of the city would be necessary to mechanically and biologically treat all of Düsseldorf's wastewater. The project design was developed by engineers from the canal and water management authority in conjunction with specialist institutes (Prof. Dr. Kehr, Hanover, and Prof. Dr. Liebmann, Munich). With this new plant, Düsseldorf is the first major city to discharge all of its fully biologically treated wastewater into the Rhine. It is the second largest wastewater treatment plant in North Rhine-Westphalia; at full capacity, it can treat 280,000 m³ of wastewater, equivalent to the consumption of 1.3 million people.
