The site is part of the remediation area of a former coal mine; it was significantly affected by dangerous subsidence, unusable old buildings and structural remnants, as well as by illegal dumping of debris. The central zone, threatened by coal mining, had to remain undeveloped. However, by compacting and stabilizing the affected areas, it was possible to renovate an old miners' quarters located on the site and integrate it into the overall concept of the college complex, which also includes two buildings with associated outdoor areas. With the exception of the old miners' quarters and some overgrown trees on the spoil heap, the site was cleared.
