Towards the street, the site is restricted to the east by an existing garage and trees, and to the west by a high retaining wall. The building was designed to preserve the existing trees while maintaining the open character of the adjacent gardens along the street frontage. The narrow, elongated plot resulted in a combination of sloping roof surfaces which, although not appearing heavy in mass or height towards the street, allow for a gallery level in the attic, thus creating additional living space.
