The program comprised three groups of rooms, each accommodating thirty children. Due to several restrictive requirements—kindergarten law, regulations of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, and a precisely prescribed room layout—an initial, even clearer concept had to be modified somewhat. The starting point for the floor plan design was to create a room unit approximating a circle, which could be additively assembled into a cell structure. The chosen octagonal shape came closest to this idea. The resulting construction system was initially intended for mass production using large panels; however, this proved too expensive.
