Extension Building of the University of Winnipeg/Canada

The new university building, known as Centennial Hall, represents the second phase of the University of Winnipeg's overall expansion plan, designated "Project Expansion 70." The following factors were key considerations in the planning: the extension had to be constructed without acquiring additional land; extreme climatic conditions (hot summers and cold winters) had to be taken into account; and the building's design was intended to loosen the constraints of strict academic discipline. Furthermore, it was important to unify and accentuate the diversity and variety of buildings on the university campus (especially the inconsistency of building materials) through a dominant architectural feature, while simultaneously developing a building system that would be adaptable to future developments and changes in teaching practices that were not foreseeable at the time of planning.
