The new buildings, in their relationship to the monastery architecture, are defined by the interplay of subordination and contrast: Topographically, grouped at the foot of the hill, they are subordinate to the crowning old building on the edge of the terrain. As a small-scale group of articulated structures, they form a striking contrast to the simple cube of the old building; the square courtyards of the old monastery are contrasted with a variety of differentiated outdoor spaces; while the old building is layered horizontally with rooms arranged linearly along corridors, open halls in the new buildings extend vertically through all floors, with galleries taking over the function of the corridors.
