Since the end of the 19th century, the municipality of Muttenz has developed from a small farming village at the foot of the Wartenberg hill into a sprawling suburban and industrial community. Its old town centre is architecturally one of the finest examples of surviving village architecture. From the venerable St. Arbogast Church, with its fortress-like ring wall, streets radiate out in a five-pointed star pattern, each with its own distinct and cohesive building style. The individual farmhouses with their characteristic simple roofs contrast with the striking church centre, which dominates the lower rural houses surrounding it at a relatively wide distance. A broad main square for general public use is integrated into this area.
