Three factors were predetermined and had to be considered in the planning of this house: 1. The location of the property in a river valley, a short distance from the Erft River. 2. The building program, comprising two bedrooms and a living area with a work, dining, and living room, as well as a full basement. 3. A short construction period, since the construction of the new district savings bank building necessitated the demolition of the future residents' existing house, which could only take place once the new house was occupied. This led to the development of a single-storey design with two structurally distinct components: a) a solid core built using conventional methods, containing all wet rooms, utility rooms, and special-purpose rooms, such as the basement stairs, kitchen, entrance toilet, bathroom, and utility room; and b) two prefabricated timber-frame components for the bedrooms and living room.
