The school building for approximately 600 students, which won first prize in a competition (already announced in 1966), was erected on a former allotment garden site in a turn-of-the-century urban district. The building was not intended to be a prominent urban feature, but rather its height and dimensions were designed to roughly correspond to the surrounding four-storey apartment blocks. The building's layout and spatial arrangement were based on the need for noise and privacy, as well as the limited space resulting from the relatively low-rise structure. This led to an "introverted" design, in which the playgrounds were located inside the building and on the flat roof.
