Roofing of the Ice Stadium in Dortmund

The ice rink at Rheinlanddamm near the Westfalenhallen in Dortmund was covered with a roof structure that was unusual and architecturally interesting, even for a timber construction company. It is a flat roof consisting of several interconnected elements with a diamond-shaped cross-section. The roof, covering over 4,000 square metres, rests on concrete portals and has a free span of 49 metres. It would have been obvious to use a roof with arched trusses for the span of almost 50 metres. However, the architect preferred a flat roof to harmonize with the Westfalenhallen buildings, which are located in the immediate vicinity of the ice rink.
