Initially, the Olympic Games plans called for the equestrian stadium to be a temporary, demountable structure on the Oberwiesenfeld (the Olympic grounds), with the stands for the actual competitions located in Nymphenburg and the training camp at the Munich-Riem Equestrian Center. However, at the end of 1970, the decision was made to relocate the equestrian stadium to Riem and construct it there as a permanent building, taking into account its future use. Construction began in May 1971. The 450-hectare complex, with a total capacity of 20,000 spectators, includes, in addition to the stadium, an indoor riding arena, a judges' tower, nine show jumping arenas, seven dressage arenas, two workplaces, and (near the stables) 100 double rooms for grooms.
