In the Stuttgart-Vaihingen university district, a new building was constructed for the State Materials Testing Institute (for mechanical engineering). The entire complex consists of a high-rise building and a low-rise building housing machine halls, workshops, and laboratories. A steel structure was chosen for the halls, which are 7 m and 12 m high, respectively. By doubling the structural grid used in the multi-storey building and the cast-in-place concrete structure of the hall basement from 7.50 x 7.50 m to 15 x 15 m, a relatively open and adaptable structural system was created, which will present only minor obstacles to the changes in use that are certainly to be expected in a research building.
