Car Centre in Menden
The requirement was for a heated hall for 80 to 100 cars with maximum advertising impact. Construction costs were to be comparatively low. Accommodation for 20 sales staff was needed, with good visibility of the exhibition area and meeting booths for sales discussions. The building was required to be a unified structure of glass and slender steel profiles. This ruled out all systems with rigid corners. On the other hand, the building's movement due to horizontal forces, especially due to the glass facade, had to be kept as minimal as possible. After several comparative calculations, the structural engineer opted for the system shown. The main columns are fully fixed in both principal directions, while all other columns are pendulum columns.
