Immenstadt District Hospital

The location of this 220-bed hospital, nestled against a charming small-town skyline and offering the most expansive views of the Allgäu high mountains, presented a compelling challenge. The architect, a native of this Allgäu region, was unable to bring himself to erect yet another of the ubiquitous high-rise hospital blocks found throughout the region. The structural and functional concept was hampered by the fact that neither the site conditions nor considerations for the landscape and the townscape permitted a significant increase in building height. Instead, a solution had to be found that allowed for a more staggered and horizontally oriented building without compromising medical and nursing care.
