Dominican Monastery of St. John in Hamburg-Barmbek

The monastery is built as a two-storey ring-shaped structure, directly adjoining the chancel of the neo-Gothic St. Sophia Church. The building (8300 cubic metres of enclosed space) surrounds a circular courtyard 18 metres in diameter, towards which the monks' cells and common rooms are oriented. These rooms are shielded from street noise by the outer cloister. The ring-shaped building lies within a square of tunnel bunkers dating from the last war.
