For the planning and construction of this church, the order engaged not only an architect but also a sculptor whose work demonstrated a particular ability to express spiritual content through sculptural form. The aim here was not to create a "space" in the superficial sense, but rather to symbolically embody the place where the religious ritual takes place. Both inside and out, this church was intended to be set apart from its surroundings in a way that was profoundly appropriate to its nature. The design was therefore determined less by technical means than by the direct expression of faith.
