The power plant supplies electricity to Hamburg and the surrounding area. It was built on a roughly 30-hectare site on the banks of the Yew River, in deep water suitable for seagoing vessels. Its functional layout runs parallel to the river; from west to east: power lines, transformer chambers, engine room, boiler and heavy equipment assembly, electrostatic precipitator, and chimneys.
