The airport, conveniently located near the city, reached a passenger volume of 121,000 in 1966. The new three-storey building could handle up to 600 passengers per hour. The first phase of the construction project comprised the terminal building with passenger and service areas, a restaurant and terrace café, the airport hotel (26 beds), a visitor terrace, and an operations building with workshops, ready rooms, and facilities for the airport fire brigade. The overall layout was guided by the following principle: Recent developments in aviation, the increasing volume of passengers, and the potential for future internal changes (e.g., the elimination of passport and customs controls) necessitated a corresponding operational approach.
