Exhibition Halls in Stuttgart

The halls are built on 30-metre-high concrete piles. Since the building columns could not be anchored to these piles, the steel supporting structure was constructed from frames that absorb all external forces on two sides and avoid disruptive wind bracing. Accordingly, the main columns, spaced 15 x 15 metres apart, were welded to both sides with steel plates; for aesthetic reasons, the broad sides were planed. These columns are rigidly welded to the girder grid, which is of the same height in both the longitudinal and transverse directions.
