Cultural and Memory Centre in Charlottetown

The building complex was constructed following a competition that called for a dual objective: the entire complex was to serve as a memorial to the actions of the Founding Fathers of Canada at the Charlottetown Conference a century earlier (the competition decision being made on the centenary itself), in the form of a cultural centre with a memorial hall, theatre, museum, art gallery, and library. A single, enclosed building complex incorporating all these functions would not only have overwhelmed its immediate surroundings (especially the Provincial Building, erected in 1847, which had previously been the centre of the small capital, Charlottetown), but also the entire cityscape.
