New Colour Scheme for Mainz Cathedral
The cathedral, whose construction began in 978, has had a checkered history over the centuries. Burned down on the day of its consecration in 1009 and later destroyed several times by fire and war, it was repeatedly rebuilt, and each era left its mark on it. The numerous renovations and alterations sometimes had a particularly damaging effect on the older and newer painted decorations.
