Left: Baptistery in St. John's Church, Krefeld. Design: Johannes Richstätter, Aachen School of Applied Arts. Workshop: Wilhelm Derix, Kaiserswerth. The structure of the neo-Gothic chapel has been altered; the high-set lancet windows have been lowered in the style of 14th-century Gothic architecture. The small space, which opens fully onto the nave, is defined as a chapel by its windows. The spatial boundary, only suggested by the architecture in a skeletal manner, is formed by the windows, which, through the properties of opal glass—opaque except for individual panes, allowing it to be transparent—integrate themselves as a kind of picture wall within the spatial shell.
