Ring of Remembrance – Memorial in Ablain Saint Nazaire

 - Claudia Fuchs

Some 10 km west of Lens on the hill of Notre Dame de Lorette next to the largest military cemetery in France stands an oval structure – the Ring of Remembrance to the hundreds of thousands of troops who were killed here in the First World War. In 1914–15, this elevated area of land on the Western Front was fiercely contested because of its strategic position. The new memorial by the Parisian architect Philippe Prost speaks a clear language without resorting to national or heroic gestures.
