Close to the high-rise business and media developments of Canary Wharf, two small sculptural kiosks are the focus of attention. Their folded, geometric forms are reminiscent of origami. A subtle mechanism in the lightly curved front face allows the hinged triangular elements to open and close like a concertina. Driven by an electrical winch and balanced by a counterweight, three hollow-steel frames turn about an axial steel bolt. Internally, the 1.95 × 3 m steel structure is clad with laminated timber and a waterproof membrane. The powder-coated aluminium panels form an extremely resistant outer skin. Light and easy to transport by truck, the kiosks were prefabricated at works and need no foundations.
