Student Hall of Residence in Sant Cugat del Vallès

The new student hall of residence in Sant Cugat del Vallès, a town in the metropolitan region of Barcelona, is situated between the architectural faculty and a housing area. One condition of the competition held by the Technical University of Catalonia was the use of a modular precast concrete system made by a Spanish manufacturer. The winning team, consisting of two Catalan architectural offices, allowed itself to modify the standard concrete boxes, which are open on the end faces. Firstly, they did without the wall and floor finishings foreseen by the manufacturer and left the surfaces in an untreated state. Secondly, they selected dimensions of 5 × 11.2 m – the maximum size transportable by lorry.
