Abelmann Vielain Pock’s extension of a listed 1930s faculty building at the University of Sustainable Development in Eberswalde, north of Berlin, is a triple-storey, massive timber structure clad in Alaskan cedar shingles. It accommodates a foyer and seminar room on the ground floor, a lecture hall on the first floor, and staff offices on the uppermost level. The walls and intermediate floors consist of cross-laminated fir timber which has been left visible in the interiors. The existing faculty building was insulated from the inside with calciium silicate boards, and its box-type windows were only repaired where necessary. A new pellet boiler in the old building now provides the entire inner-city campus with renewable heat. It is distributed by an existing district heating network which was upgraded during the refurbishment.
