The refurbished Chamber of Deputies of the Bavarian Landtag (state parliament) is located in the Munich district of Haidhausen, not far from the state parliament itself. The office building has served as one of two external branches of the parliament since the 1970s. Following the refurbishment, it now accommodates 40 offices for delegates and three meeting rooms in its three wings. The four-storey main building, situated in the eastern part of the site, dates to the end of the 19th century and was initially used as a hotel and restaurant. In the 1980s, soon after the Free State of Bavaria had become the new owners, a three-storey annex with additional offices was erected in the south, as well as a single-storey wing on the northern side of the inner courtyard. With its pale-yellow plaster, the old building was practically unadorned except for a cornice above the ground floor. As the building was not listed, the preconditions for implementation of the energy-saving measures requested by the client were ideal. The windows on all the facades were replaced with triple-glazed timberframe windows painted white. In addition, the former hotel was fitted with insulation on the facades as well as with a completely new thermally-insulated roof truss; the ceiling of the unheated basement was also insulated from underneath. At the time of construction, the more recent wing in the south had been insulated fairly well. Here, apart from a replacement of the windows, the only upgrade undertaken was the patching and re-painting of the plaster facade. The single-storey annex in the north, in contrast, was already so dilapidated that it had to be completely demolished and rebuilt from scratch.
