Report: Hotel Skyscraper in Barcelona
With the main buildings of the Forum of Cultures (2004) by Herzog & de Meuron and Josep Lluís Mateo, and the Torre Agbar by Jean Nouvel, which mark the focal points of Avenida Diagonal Mar, the formerly dilapidated industrial district received a significant boost in urban renewal. Besides its central location, the proximity to the coast also makes the area attractive to investors. For several years now, residential and office buildings, shopping centres, and hotels have been springing up like mushrooms around the Avenida. Among the many mostly average new buildings, Dominique Perrault's new hotel stands out, not least because of its 112.8-metre height.
