The new L-Bank building fills a gap in a prominent location in Karlsruhe. The circular area around the palace square was largely destroyed in a bombing raid in 1944. The buildings erected after the war were designed to reflect the historical layout; only the site of the L-Bank building had previously been marred by a parking lot. In 2003, the state-owned credit bank launched a competition for the development of the site, which was won by the Berlin-based firm Weinmiller Architekten.
