The English like things colourful. Fed up with the dreary grey of a London winter, tens of thousands of visitors crowd their way into the gardens around the Royal Hospital every year in May to see the world-famous RHS Chelsea Flower Show – the biggest exhibition of its kind in the world. This is followed at the beginning of July by the flower display at Hampton Court Palace, while the loveliest beds of roses are traditionally to be found in Queen Mary’s Gardens, Regent’s Park. People wishing to relax their eyes from overstimulation, though, escape to Hyde Park and neighbouring Kensington Gardens with their broad areas of grass and stocks of trees. Here, it is the colour of lush green that dominates.
