Housing Development with Event Hall in Berlin
- Heide Wessely
In this project, which took more than eight years to complete, it was the wish of the clients to have a second dwelling in the city. In 2006, a 900 m² site was found just behind the former border to East Germany, and housing as a cross-border cultural exchange became the underlying idea. The outcome was a building that unites various functions, outstanding among which is a leasable hall equipped with modern stage technology for various events, including seminars, conferences and theatrical performances of many different kinds, with a communal kitchen, and a dining hall and courtyard for the users. They can also spend the night there in small rooms – that recall Japanese ryokans – on the floor above.
