The »Weltquartier« (World District) is one of the largest and most prominent projects that has been initiated in the context of the International Building Exhibition (IBA) 2013 in Hamburg. A total of 470 apartments are being refurbished and 270 new apartment units are being added to the former harbour workers’ district, which dates back to the 1930s, and is today largely inhabited by migrants from as many as 30 countries. With two new-builds — one of which achieves Passive House Standard and the other the »nearly Passive House« German KfW-40 standard — Gerber Architekten have now completed the Weltquartier at its northern edge. While their face brick facades and gabled roofs correspond to the existing refurbished buildings further south, the asymmetrical zinc-covered roofs and the gently zigzagging facades lend the new-builds a distinctly contemporary appearance.
