Report: Refurbishment and Extension of the National Theatre in London

Theatre foyers are like the decks of excursion boats: they encourage strolling and conversing; they are the stages upon which the pageantry of societal life unfolds. The National Theatre in London, one such steamer in exposed concrete moored on the southern bank of the Thames in the mid-1970s by the British architect Denys Lasdun (1914 – 2001), illustrates these parallels. In his conception of the building as a place for people to come together, Lasdun not only included generously dimensioned foyers, but also numerous roof terraces.
