Holiday Home in Druxberge

The conversion of a brick barn dating to 1930 is marked by carefully considered interventions. The building in a small village near Magdeburg had been altered in various ways over the course of time. When the wooden shutters are closed, the transformation is barely noticeable. When they are open, the new generously dimensioned windows offer glimpses of the home’s inner workings. The ground floor is spanned by steel beams and segmental barrel vaults; the upper levels are marked by the timber roof framework. The new distribution of spaces is also oriented to the existing load-bearing structure. The great room occupies nearly the entire ground floor. A second living room on the first floor not only provides access to the adjoining bedrooms but also to the spaces below the roof. The original roof construction was retrofitted by doubling up the existing rafters. Insulation was inserted between the new rafters: the roof fulfils current energy standards. By employing interior insulation it was possible to retain the characteristic brick facade.
