The National Military Museum of the Netherlands resembles an extensive black slab that seemingly floats above the site of the former military airbase Soesterberg. Beneath its impressive 250 m long roof, the new building unites the collections of the Army and the Air Force. The only additional elements are a glass facade that encloses the building and features varying setbacks as well as cube-shaped interior volumes, one of which penetrates the roof surface and becomes a lookout tower. Visitors approach the museum from higher ground in the north across a broad bridge. The history of the Dutch armed forces is on display on the two levels of the interior cubes. Some of them are open to the 13 m tall space that envelops the building core and continues into the landscape. In this „arsenal“, guns and tanks are arranged on the seamless poured concrete floor. Most of the airplanes – seemingly in wild pursuit – are suspended from the ceiling.
